Siouxsie and the Banshees album by album

Siouxsie Sioux (born 27 May 1957 as Susan Janet Ballion), is an English singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. She is best known as the lead singer of the rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees (1976–1996). They released 11 studio albums and had several UK Top 20 singles including "Hong Kong Garden", "Happy House", "Peek-a-Boo", plus a US Billboard Top 25 hit "Kiss Them for Me".

Siouxsie also formed a second band the Creatures (1981–2005). With the Creatures, she recorded four studio albums and the hit single "Right Now". After disbanding the Creatures in the mid-2000s, she has continued as a solo artist, using the name Siouxsie, and released the album Mantaray to critical acclaim in 2007.

AllMusic named Siouxsie as "one of the most influential British singers of the rock era". In 2011, she was awarded for Outstanding Contribution to Music at the Q Awards and in 2012, at the Ivor Novello Awards, she received the Inspiration Award.

Siouxsie and the Banshees were a British rock band, formed in London in 1976 by vocalist Siouxsie Sioux and bass guitarist Steven SeverinInitially associated with the punk scene, the band rapidly evolved to create "a form of post-punk discord full of daring rhythmic and sonic experimentation". Their debut album The Scream was released in 1978 to widespread critical acclaim. In 1980, they changed their musical direction and became "almost a different band" with Kaleidoscope, which peaked at number 5 in the UK Albums Chart. With Juju (1981) which also reached the top 10, they became an influence on the emerging gothic scene. In 1988, the band made a breakthrough in North America with the multifaceted album Peepshow, which received critical praise. With substantial support from alternative rock radio stations, they achieved a mainstream hit in the US in 1991 with the single "Kiss Them for Me".

During their career, Siouxsie and the Banshees released 11 studio albums and 30 singles. The band experienced several line-up changes, with Siouxsie and Severin being the only constant members. They disbanded in 1996, with Siouxsie and drummer Budgie continuing to record music as the Creatures, a second band they had formed in the early 1980s. In 2004, Siouxsie began a solo career.  Q included John McKay's guitar playing on "Hong Kong Garden" in their list of "100 Greatest Guitar Track Ever", while Mojo rated guitarist John McGeoch in their list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" for his work on "Spellbound". The Times cited the group as "one of the most audacious and uncompromising musical adventurers of the post-punk era".

Sioux was an early supporter of the Sex Pistols and, along with Severin and others, formed the Bromley Contingent. She drew attention when she turned up for a Sex Pistol concert at the Screen on The Green in Islington in August 1976 in a kinky outfit that displayed her tits.

In December she turned up for the Bill Grundy interview on Thames Television. Grundy's response to her flirting prompted a torrent of abuse from Steve Jones which led to Grundy being sacked, the Pistols being dropped by EMI,  Sioux appearing on the front page of The Mirror, and mass interest in punk rock.

Siouxsie flirts with Grundy and pulls funny
faces while Steve Jones calls Grundy a rotter.

Siouxsie the Punk Shocker

The band's sound and image is a blend of her contemporaries Adam Ant  and The Cure. Adam Ant's guitarist, Marco Pirroni, had played with Siouxsie and  Severin on their debut gig in 1976. Though Ant was a contemporary, he was always a step behind the Banshees having started a couple of years later, so Ant's imagery and sound was influenced by the Banshees rather than the other way round, but he had the greater commercial success.

The band's biggest hits were:

* "Hong Kong Garden": Aug 1978 (debut single) - No 7
* "Happy House": March 1980 - No 17
* "Spellbound": May 1981 - No 22
* "Dear Prudence": Sept 1983 - No 3
* "This Wheel's On Fire": Jan 1987   - No 14 (I don't recall this at all - it must have been a brief appearance in the charts)

Siouxsie writes the lyrics, and the band write the music, unless noted.

"Hong Kong Garden"
(Aug 1978)

Debut single and first record release. The band performed it on Top Of The Pops. It reached No. 7 in the singles chart. Originally not included on any album, it is now included in re-releases of  The Scream

The Scream (Nov 1978)

The cover of  McCartney's "Helter Skelter" really stands out. Breath-taking: "You may be a lover but you aint no fucking dancer!" It's nowhere near as good as the original (after all, that's one of the Fab Four's best tracks, an audacious piece of industrial rock that Macca wrote to rival the Velvet Underground's "White Light/White Heat"), but it's a compelling version balancing admiration and irreverence - the band (or Siouxsie, really) making it their own with some gothic menace and attitude.

"Hong Kong Garden" wasn't originally included on the album because it had been previously released as a single, but it has been included on subsequent releases, and it belongs here. It was the band's most successful original song, and for the general public it is the song that defines them.  "Carcass" has something of the Pistols' "Bodies" about it, both in terms of the guitar attack and energy, and the subject matter. "Bodies" is about an abortion, and focuses on the bloody mess, while "Carcass" conflates a love affair with a butcher chopping up meat, which has echoes of Marc Bolan's "Graceful Fat Sheba". And by now we're getting a sense of Siouxsie's influences - the Sex Pistols, the Velvet Underground, Marc Bolan, and the Beatles, among others. There is an interest in some of the soundscapes that the Velvets created, but the band don't wish to be musical or experimental, they - like the Pistols - are more interested in pop songs with the energy and drive of British RnB. This is the modern post punk world where some of the musical developments of the Seventies are seen as too abstract, too difficult, too insular and not popular enough, and perhaps open to accusations of self-indulgence.  But Siouxsie is interested in soundscapes that are a little more interesting than simple RnB or power pop. And she is interested in lyrics which explore the darker side, the underworld, and the tension of comparing a love affair with a butcher cutting up meat.

The band are trying new things here, and stretch themselves on the 14 minute long "Lords Prayer", so this is an admirable album, but it hasn't proved popular, and is widely considered to be the band's worse album.

"Happy House"
(March 1980)

First recording released with Budgie on drums and John McGeoch, previously of Magazine, on guitar. It was included on the next album, Kaleidoscope (Aug 1980).

AllMusic:

Kaleidoscope (Aug 1980)

After several internal disputes the original guitarist and drummer left, and Budgie and McGeoch joined to make this lighter, more pop oriented album.  Good, popular tracks here, and the album is very attractive and listenable, but the band seem to have left something behind that made their two first albums interesting.

Juju (1981)

This is the band's most popular and most acclaimed album. It opens with one of the band's best songs, "Spellbound", but then doesn't make much progress on what the band have already done. Call it a consolidation. Done well, and a decent album, but perhaps not quite as important as the band's first album, though just as enjoyable, and much smoother.
